The Sunnyside Conservatory
UPDATE: As of Dec. 5, 2010, the restored conservatory is open. Our pre-renovation photos have now become an archive of what once was. We'll shortly post some photographs of the new site.
O.K., so we like ruins. A decrepit building, an overgrown garden, throw in some history and we're addicted. Sure Rome's got some interesting stuff and Machu Picchu's not bad. But on a spring afternoon, the Sunnyside Conservatory at 236 Monterey Boulevard is not to be sneered at and the travel costs are pretty reasonable. The building persisted in a charming state of arrested decay and the garden was exuberantly unkempt. Signs threaten a large cash infusion for improvements, which we hope will not overwhelm its character. You helped pay for it, might as well enjoy it. If this were located in the Marina, the tour buses and lines for visitors would be blocks long. A not unreasonable walk from the Excelsior (1- 1 1/2 miles) thru an urban street scape.
